Bread Riot occurs.

May 19, 1713

Some 200 people protest the high price of bread by gathering on Boston Common. It is the third such riot in Boston in four years and the lieutenant governor is shot when he attempts to break up the demonstration. The mob then attempts to break into Mason’s warehouse nearby to obtain corn, then attack attacks Andrew Belcher’s warehouse, where grain is stored in preparation for export to the West Indies. Boston selectmen subsequently convince the General Court to pass a law prohibiting local merchants from exporting grain when a domestic scarcity occurs.
